Murano Glass Bowl by Tyra Lundgren for Venini & Co., Italy
This beautiful rare glass bowl was designed by the famous Swedish artist Tyra Lundgren (1897 – 1979) for Venini & Co in 1937 and exhibited the following year. The large leaf-shaped bowl features the mezza filigrana (half filigree) technique, which was an ancient glass blowing technique modernised by Carlo Scarpa for the Venice Biennale of 1934.
Lundgren, who hailed from Sweden, was Venini's first woman designer of Modernist glass. She drew her inspiration from nature and is well known for her ceramic and glass forms resembling birds, fish and leaves.
On the underside is the very faint three lined Venini acid stamp 'Venini Murano Italia', which indicates mid-century execution. It was used by Venini from around 1945 until 1965.
Literature Reference: Paolo Venini And His Furnace, Barovier and Sonego, pg.367 illustrates model.
