Hand-blown Glass Vase by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, Finland
This gorgeous bud vase belongs to Sarpaneva's Sydän (or Heart) series, which was designed in 1953. This model 3556 features free blown solid clear glass formed into the shape of a heart. The narrow opening leads to a suspended ovoid cavity, allowing it to beautifully highlight single stems.
Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) was a Finnish designer and sculptor, who rose to great international fame in the 1950s for his ability to transform everyday objects into art. Sarpaneva was a master of many materials, but it was glass that captured his imagination the most due to how it interacted with light. Notably, it was Sarpaneva, who designed the iconic Iittala logo that the glassworks continues to use today!
This piece is signed on the underside 'Timo Sarpaneva (designer), Iittala (maker)'. It is in excellent vintage condition with no notches, cracks, discolouration or repairs. There is some light visible surface wear commensurate with age and use.
