Mould-blown Glass Vase by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, Finland

This truly stunning vase features heavy glass that was blown into a wooden mould. The molten glass was allowed to burn the mould, which created a unique textured surface. It has a beautiful sculptural-like quality and is in excellent condition with no notches, discolouration, cracks or repairs. It is signed ‘Timo Sarpaneva 3354’.

Brutalism emerged in the 1950’s and grew out of the early 20th century Modernist movement. The term comes from the French words ‘beton brut’, which means raw concrete. This is quite fitting given the characteristics of Brutalism –  rough, unfinished surfaces, unusual shapes, heavy looking materials and straight lines.
