Mould-blown Glass Vase by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, Finland
This example from the Finlandia series features heavy glass that was blown into a wooden mould. The molten glass was allowed to burn the mould, which created the unique textured surface and beautiful sculptural-like quality you can see in the images!
The colour and condition of this piece make it a very rare find. Due to the thin edged rim, it is common to find these with significant chips. This piece is in excellent condition with no notches, discolouration, cracks or repairs. It is signed ‘Timo Sarpaneva 3359’.
Brutalism emerged in the 1950’s and grew out of the early 20th century Modernist movement. The term comes from the French words ‘beton brut’, which means raw concrete. This is quite fitting given the characteristics of Brutalism – rough, unfinished surfaces, unusual shapes, heavy looking materials and straight lines.
