Mould-blown Glass Vase by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, Finland
This beautiful original piece from the Finlandia series features heavy transparent glass that was blown into a wooden mould. The molten glass was allowed to burn the mould, which created the unique bark-textured surface and stunning sculptural quality you can see in the images!
The model and condition of this piece make it a very rare find! Due to the thin edged rim, it is common to find these with significant chips. This vase is in excellent condition with no notches, discolouration, cracks or repairs. It is signed ‘Timo Sarpaneva (designer) 3359 (model)’.
Brutalism emerged in the 1950s and grew out of the early 20th century Modernist movement. The term comes from the French words ‘beton brut’, which means raw concrete. This is quite fitting given the characteristics of Brutalism – rough, unfinished surfaces, unusual shapes, heavy looking materials and straight lines.
