Tall Glass Vase by Tauno Wirkkala for Humppila, Finland

Mesiurut Series, Signed
c.1970s, Brutalist/Modernist, Finland
Excellent Vintage Condition
H 26cm, W 9.5cm, 1.6kg

This stunning vase features heavy mould-blown clear and lime green cased glass. It has a faceted surface pattern with a honeycomb pattern base that interacts beautifully with the light. It was designed by Tauno Wirkkala (1932 – 2005), who worked for various famous Finnish glassworks – including Humppila. He is best known for his nature inspired designs of vibrant green or amber tones. Talent must have run in the family as his brother was the celebrated designer Tapio Wirkkala.

Brutalism emerged in the 1950’s and grew out of the early 20th century Modernist movement. The term comes from the French words ‘beton brut’, which means raw concrete. This is quite fitting given the characteristics of Brutalism –  rough, unfinished surfaces, unusual shapes, heavy looking materials and straight lines.

In excellent condition, this vase has no scratches, notes, repairs, cracks or discolouration. It is signed on the side ‘Tauno Wirkkala Humppila Finland’
