Cast Glass Bowl by Tauno Wirkkala for Humppila, Finland
This beautiful 'Northern Lights' bowl features honey amber glass in a Brutalist style. It was designed by Tauno Wirkkala (1932 - 2005), who worked for various famous Finnish glassworks - including Humppila. He is best known for his nature inspired designs of vibrant green or amber tones. Talent must have run in the family as his brother was the celebrated designer Tapio Wirkkala.
Brutalism emerged in the 1950’s and grew out of the early 20th century Modernist movement. The term comes from the French words ‘beton brut’, which means raw concrete. This is quite fitting given the characteristics of Brutalism – rough, unfinished surfaces, unusual shapes, heavy looking materials and straight lines.
This bowl is in excellent condition with no scratches, notches, repairs, cracks or discolouration.
