Handblown Glass Vase by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala
This rare handblown vase features super solid clear glass with internal bubbles. The beautiful effect is reminiscent of sea foam. It has an interesting twisted form with an ovoid cavity.
The vase was designed during the mid-century period by Tapio Wirkkala (1915 - 1987), who is hailed not only as an icon of 20th century Finnish design, but is also internationally recognised as a significant figure in design history. It is said that Wirkkala was a recluse despite his international fame. The designer preferred to spend time alone in Finland's nature, from which he drew his inspiration for his minimal and stunningly beautiful design.
This vase is signed on the underside 'Tapio Wirkkala, Iittala'. It is in good vintage condition with some visible signs of wear commensurate with age and use. It has no notches, discolouration, cracks or repairs. There is a surface scratch that measures 2.5cm long below the opening, please see close up photo.
