Handblown Glass Carafe by Sten Branzell for AB De Svenska Kristallbruken
This carafe features hand-blown transparent smokey blue glass with decorative bubbles. The interesting and playful design has a biomorphic shaped body with side embellishments and ribbed stopper. The model was designed by Sten Branzell in 1923 (see images for drawing).
Sten Branzell (1883 - 1956) was a Swedish architect, who was an artistic adviser and designer for AB De Svenska Kristallbruken - a group that included Kosta, Eda, Reijmyre, Alsterbro and Alsterfors glassworks. Prior to this position, Branzell had served in the Finnish civil war, where he forged a friendship with the famous designer Alvar Aalto. Notably, his wife Anna was the first woman in Sweden to graduate in architecture.
The body of this antique carafe is in very good condition with no notches, cracks or repairs. It has some internal clouding commensurate with age and use. The stopper remains functional with extensive wear at base (see image).
