Rare Blown Glass Vase by Saara Hopea for Nuutajärvi Notsjö
This vase features heavy clear glass blown into a minimal ovoid form with a cone shaped cavity that resembles a 'typhoon' - which happens to be the name of the design.
Saara Hopea, like Gunnel Nyman, is another female figure that emerged within the Nordic design world during the mid-century period. A multifaceted talent, Hopea became interested in glass design during the 50s and gained a position at Nuutajärvi glass factory where she worked under the famous Artistic Director - Kaj Franck. Notably, the renowned Triennale di Milano of '54 & '57 recognised the excellence of her glassware design, awarding her a silver medal. By all accounts, Hopea seems to have led a very interesting life, living in New York, Nepal and India with her equally creative husband before spending her final years in her native Finland.
This fantastic rare collector's piece is in excellent vintage condition with no notches, cracks, repairs or discolouration. It has some very minor light visible surface wear commensurate with age. The etched signature on the underside reads 'S. Hopea Nuutajärvi Notsjö, 60'
