Mould blown Glass Vase by Pavel Hlava for Crystalex Nový Bor, Czechoslovakia
This monumental organic shaped vase features solid transparent cinnamon mould-blown and hot worked glass. The interesting process involved molten glass that was blown by hand into a wire mould and then compressed, which created the unique bends and curves you can see.
This model '87165' (coined the 'Brain' vase due to the rippled texture) was designed by Pavel Hlava (1924 – 2003) and first appeared in the Czechoslovak Glass Review in 1968. The design came in a variety of colours and sizes.
Czech glass was rarely ever signed during communist rule as the ideology did not believe in highlighting the individual. This vase was produced by Crystalex, which was a national umbrella company created in 1974 that consisted of five different branches (including Crystalex Branch Corporation) that were each made up of various glassworks. This piece would have originally been labelled.
This vase is in excellent vintage condition (outstanding for age) with no notches, cracks, repairs or discolouration.
