Hand-blown Glass Vase by Miloslav Klinger for Zelezny Brod Sklo (ZBS), Czechoslovakia
This stunning large organic shaped vase features solid hand-blown crystal of translucent lemon and lilac tones. The design is attributed to Miloslav Klinger (1922 - 1999) - one of the incredible Czech glass artists, who were pushing the boundaries of glass design from behind the Iron Curtain!
Interestingly, Neodymium or ‘Alexandrite’ glass has been used, which contains the rare earth element neodymium oxide. When this element is added to the glass melt, it’s sharp absorption bands mean that colour transforms in different lighting conditions. The colour seems lilac in daylight, but can appear pale blue in florescent light. The use of this material really reflects the experimental side of the 60s and 70s.
Czech glass was rarely ever signed during communist rule as the ideology did not believe in highlighting the individual. The Zelezny Brod glassworks was founded in 1948 as a result of nationalisation and was made up of nine glass factories. The label indicates that this was likely exported for sale abroad in the 60s/70s.
This fantastic vase is in excellent vintage condition with no notches, cracks, repairs or discolouration. It has some very light wear commensurate with age and use. Please see close up image.
