Mould-blown Glass Candleholder & Vase by Martin Freyer for Rosenthal, Germany. 1970s
This beautiful tall sculptural piece features mould-blown crystal reminiscent of ice. The design can be used both as a vase or candle holder (with or without water added depending on the candle or desired effect!). It was designed by Hans Martin Freyer (1909-1975), who worked for Rosenthal between 1964 and 1974.
It is in good vintage condition with no cracks, repairs or discolouration. There are some insignificant shallow fleabites at the rim (see close up images). The underside is stamped with the Rosenthal maker's mark.
Brutalism emerged in the 1950’s and grew out of the early 20th century Modernist movement. The term comes from the French words ‘beton brut’, which means raw concrete. This is quite fitting given the characteristics of Brutalism – rough, unfinished surfaces, unusual shapes, heavy looking materials and straight lines.
This piece stands alone well but also looks fantastic paired up!
