Mould-blown Glass Vase by Kai Blomqvist for Kumela, Finland. 1970s
This lovely large vase features solid mould-blown ombre amber glass. The gorgeous texture interacts with the light beautifully and gives it a wonderful sculptural quality! The size would make this a fantastic centrepiece.
It comes with a removable silver edge that was made by Sten and Laine in 1975. It is hallmarked with the maker's motif, crown motif (Finland), 830 (material), town motif (Turku) & X7 (year).
The vase is in excellent vintage condition with no notches, cracks, repairs or discolouration and is signed ‘Kai Blomqvist’ and ‘Oy Kumela’ on the underside. The silver edge retains its original shape and has a small personal engraving.
Brutalism emerged in the 1950’s and grew out of the early 20th century Modernist movement. The term comes from the French words ‘beton brut’, which means raw concrete. This is quite fitting given the characteristics of Brutalism – rough, unfinished surfaces, unusual shapes, heavy looking materials and straight lines.
