Blown Glass Vase by Gunnel Nyman for Nuutajarvi Notsjo, Finland.
Gunnel Nyman (1909 – 1948) was a true innovator of Finnish glass design and a forerunner of the Modern glass movement. Her legacy is a fantastic celebration of the emergence of female designers during the mid-century period. Although her life was sadly too short, her small collection of designs have become some of Finland's most iconic.
Nyman was a master of beautifully capturing light and colour. Her design is particularly recognised for its minimal organic forms that echo a feminine quality, incorporating timeless abstract and subtle elements. The famous Norwegian art historian Ada Polak was a great fan of Gunnel Nyman and believed that 'Whatever technique she employed, she gave to all her designs a subtle touch of true poetry'.
This stunningly beautiful vase, known as model GN12, features solid amber & clear crystal with controlled internal bullicante. The incredible effect is created through a spike mould blown glass technique, which was expertly mastered by Nuutajarvi glass artists.
The vase is signed ‘G Nyman Nuutajarvi Notsjo’ in acid pen on the underside. This piece is in excellent condition (outstanding for age) with no heavy scratches, cracks, notches, repairs or discolouration.
