Hand blown Glass Vase by Chřibská glassworks, Czechoslovakia
This stunning large organic shaped vase features solid hand-blown crystal in a twisted form of transparent emerald tones. Its characteristics are typical of mid-century Czech glass production - a time when Czech glass artists were truly pushing the boundaries of glass design from behind the Iron Curtain.
Czech glass was rarely ever signed during communist rule as the ideology did not believe in highlighting the individual. Chřibská (which was founded in 1414) was nationalised around the 1950s and became part of the Borske Sklo National Corporation.
Joseph Hospodka was head designer from 1958 until 1970 so he possibly designed this piece or it could be by Emanuel Beranek, who also designed for Chřibská. It would have originally been labelled.
This vase is in good vintage condition with no notches or cracks. There is some surface wear associated with age and use. This includes a small rough area near the opening and a sanded area at the base. Please see close up photos.
As this is quite a monumental vase, these imperfections are only visible on close inspection and do not detract from the overall beauty of this sculptural piece!
