Unique Stoneware Vase by Berndt Friberg for Gustavsberg Studio
This beautiful hand-thrown unique vase was created by the master of Modern ceramics Bernt Friberg (1899-1981). Friberg was a Swedish ceramic artist praised for his outstanding technical perfection, simplicity of form, glossy glazes and attention to fine detail.
This special piece features the Aniara glaze. Interestingly, this glaze was named by the Swedish Nobel Prize-winning author Harry Martinsson after visiting an exhibition of the artist's work. Upon gazing into one of the bowls on display, Martinsson experienced the same sensation of cosmic vertigo as described in his celebrated poem ‘Aniara’, which was an exploration of the relationship between science and poetry, between the wish to understand and the difficulty to comprehend.
This piece is in excellent vintage condition with no notches, cracks or repairs. It is signed ‘Friberg’ with the studio mark and year 'O', which represents year 1973. This dating system was used between 1948 until 1974 on all unique (meaning one of a kind) pieces.
